Our trip west, September 2002
Day 3, September 1
Roswell to Silver City
Had breakfast at Denny's in Roswell, then checked out of the motel and headed for Lincoln New Mexico on US-380. Lincoln was the count seat and the focus of hte Lincoln County War in the late 1870s and early 1880s. Billy the Kid made his name here.
Left Lincoln after 2 hours and headed east on US-380 back to the junction with US-70. Took US-70 into Ruidoso Downs and the Hubbard Museum of the Horse. It was a real nice museum, but the outside sculptures were spectacular. Here's a sample:

We spent about an hour at the museum. As we left Ruidoso Downs, a long line of cars was backed up to enter the race track. The big All American Futurity was to be held ont he next day. We continued on US-70 to Alamogordo, driving through the Apache reservation. As we left the mountains, Sandra couldn't believe that white stuff on the horizon was dunes. We eventually got down to the flatter ground and stopped at a pistachio plantation, where Sandra got some nuts and candy, plus a recommendation for lunch. We had lunch at a decent Mexican restaurant and pressed on to White Sands. Here's the pictures:

We left White Sands at 2:45 and headed for Las Cruces, where we visited Sandra's uncle Murry Kugler. Those pictures are available only to family. Left Las Cruces at 5:30 PM on I-10 to deming, then US-180 to Silver City, an old mining town that now has a state university. Arrived about 7:15 PM, stayed at Holiday Inn Express and ate at another Mexican place, La Cocina. This one was good.
Total miles for day: 337. Time from Roswell to Silver City: 12:15.
