Our trip west, September 2002
Day 1, August 30
Warrensburg to Raton
We left the farm at Warrensburg at 5:05 AM on US-50. Had clear sailing through Kansas City on I-470 & 435 to I-35. Stayed on I-45 to Emporia, and took off to the Flint Hills on US-50. Disappointed, since the trip through the hills was all in the valley of the Cottonwood River. Pressed on until we got hungry around 11:30 at Dodge City. First restaurant had a bad case of the slows, one referred by the welcome center was lah-de-dah. Bought gas and headed out on US-56, still hungry, 45 minutes later. 30 minutes down the road, we drove down the main street of Sublette, where we saw a cafe called the Cattlemen's open. Great idea, good food, reasonale price and freindly staff.
Back onthe road at almost 2 PM through SW Kansas (dead flat), a corner of the Oklahoma panhandle, and into New Mexico (now on PDT).
By 4:15 we arrived at Capulin Volcano national monument. This is a relatively recent cinder cone and not badly eroded. Gave some great views of the coutryside. Here's my pictures (click the thumbnail for a much bigger version):
We then continued to Raton, where we stayed at the Comfort Inn. Gas was high, and we had a good dinner.
Total miles for day: 698. Time from home until Raton: 14 hours, 14 minutes.
