Our trip west, September 2002
Day 9, September 7
Torrey to Grand Junction - part 1, including Capitol Reef and highway shots
Had breakfast at the motel restaurant and left at 7:55 AM on Utah Scenic Byway UT-24. Capitol Reef National Park is just a few miles up road. We took the scenic road but stayed on the paved part, as it had rained overnight. Even so, we saw where they'd had to grade the debris from the low-water crossings. The morning light left much of the cliff front (known as the Waterpocket Fold) in shadow, but gave some spectacular long distance shots.
Returned past the visitor center to UT-24 and followed it through the park. Stopped to see petroglyphs; also got a couple of shots of the Capitol Dome formation that gave the park its name.

OK - I blew them up for you. Some cowboy took potshots at them |

Continued on UT-24 heading for I-70. En route, we had planned to stop at Goblin Valley State Park, but the sun wasn't too good and it looked like a long delay. As events would prove out, that was a wise decision. Along the road, we did see some interesting formations so had to stop and shoot them
Too much to get on one page today. Canyonlands and Arches parks are on the next page
