Missouri Travels and Day Trips

The Missouri Ozarks
Trip to SE Missouri for mountains, parks, caves and springs April 29-May 1, 2003

This was an Anniversary trip for us. We left Warrensburg area going to Windsor, then MO-52 thru Cole Camp to Versailles, then MO-5 to Camdenton. We stopped at Bridal Cave & Ha-Ha-Tonka in the Camdenton area, taking no pictures. We stayed on MO-5 to Lebanon for lunch at the West Side Cafe. Picked up I-44 and stopped at Waynesville and St. James ending up at Cuba, where we spent the night at the HIE. Our afternoon side trip was to Onondaga Cave - where we sat out a really nasty thunderstorm. Dinner was at a BBQ place in Cuba - pretty good.

The next day we headed south on MO-19 through Steelville, where we picked up MO-49. Our first stop was Dillard Mill, a highly-photographed location and very scenic.

We continued south on MO-49 thru Viburnum and Bixby, turning off on N road for Johnson's Shut Ins. The park is now temporarily closed because of the flood caused by a dam failure at the Taum Sauk reservoir, but you can get an idea of what it looked like here.

We followed N Road to MO-21 and followed that south to the Arcadia Valley. Pilot Knob is the home of Ft. Davidson State Historic Site, scene of a bloody Ciivl War battle. Sandra's Great-grandfather John A. Adams (who built our house) is depicted in the visitor center. Also in this area is Taum Sauk Moauntain, the highest point in Missouri at 1772 feet.

We picked up MO-49 again at Glover and followed it south to Piedmont. En route, we drove trhu Gads Hill, supposedly the scene of Jesse James' first train robbery. From Piedmont, we took HH Road which took us across the Clearwater Lake dam, ending up omnMO-34 to MO-21 and eventually to US-60. US-60 took us to Van Buren, where we stopped at a park along the Current River to celebrate our anniversary. Then we drove down MO-103 to Big Spring.

We returned to MO-21 south and took it down to Doniphan. From Doniphan, we took US-160 to West Plains, where we stayed in a Holiday Inn Express.
The next day, it rained!. We took MO-14 and assorted back roads to visit a friend's skeet range near Vanzant. We took MO-181 south to the Gainesville area, where we visited Zanoni Mill B&B. Then, it was back up 181 to N, then 95 back to MO-14. We passed a famous mill, but the weather wasn't cooperating and we took no pictures. MO-14 took us to Ava and in to the Springfield area. We headed home on MO-13, after an enjoyable Anniversary trip.
